The
beautiful Luberon mountains of Provence in one of France's accredited "plus beaux villages de France". Bomb down the autoroutes,
let the Eurostar take the strain, or fly from Gatwick to Marseille and
from there in your nippy little hire car you will reach your destination
in under an hour, admiring Cézanne's Mont Sainte-Victoire and
breathing in the scent of the pines en route.
Lourmarin,
with its twisting little streets, mossy fountains, and cascading flowers
awaits you.
This is not just a picture-postcard village; here
you can play tennis, swim, sip coffee in one of the four pavement cafés,
or browse in the art galleries and niche boutiques. For the culture vultures
there is the C15 chateau to explore, and music festivals at La Roc d'Antheron,
at Aix-en-Provence, Avignon and Orange - all within easy access.
Nature lovers will revel in the abundant walks and all the treasures of the Luberon National Park with its scented countryside of juniper and wild herbs, cherry and almond orchards, vineyards and lavender fields. The Camargue and Nîmes are also within easy reach as is the Cote D'Azure for sun lovers and people watchers. There is even an active football team with state of the art pitch in the centre of the village!
For self caterers,
the three mini stores and delicatessens will provide everything you
need, and who will be able to resist the offerings of the boulanger
/ pâtissier artisanal with his home-made croissants, bread and
exquisite pastries? And for the gourmet? Would two Michelin starred
restaurants and a choice of 12 other bistros suffice? All within walking
distance of your apartment.
The local Co-Operative offers wines for all tastes from local plonk to gold medal winners; other excellent vintages are obtainable from nearby viticulteurs. Local colour abounds with the weekly market on a Friday, providing you with opportunities to experience the splendours of the local culture and horticulture.
